Description

FPT Fluid Power Technology designed and manufactured the custom made 700 ton Lock nut hydraulic cylinders high tonnage version for the construction of Denmark’s third longest bridge – Storstrøm Bridge. The Storstrøm bridge will be built with a double-track electrified railway for 200 km/h and a two-lane regional road for 80 km/h. Additionally, the bridge will have a lane for cyclists and pedestrians.

The Storstrøm Bridge is 3,199 meters long and 9 meters wide. The bridge has a total of 50 spans. The configuration of the access span is somewhat unusual, with columns alternately spaced 57.8 m and 62.2 m apart and suspended spans positioned in the longer spans. As part of the planned Fehmarn Belt Fixed Link project, the railway from Ringsted to Rødbyhavn will be electrified and the one between Vordingborg and Rødbyhavn will also be converted from single track to double track. The Fehmarn Belt Fixed Link or Fehmarn Belt Tunnel is a submerged tunnel under construction, which will connect the Danish island of Lolland with the German island of Fehmarn, crossing the 18-kilometre-wide (11 miles) Fehmarn Belt in the Sea Baltic. It will provide a direct link between northern Germany and Lolland, and from there to the Danish island of Zealand and Copenhagen, making it the world’s longest road and rail tunnel. The tunnel will form an important link between Central Europe and Scandinavia.

FPT manufactured the high tonnage hydraulic cylinders used to build the bridge. The cylinders have been designed following the needs of the construction site and produced in a custom-made configuration with a maximum operating pressure of 700 bar, 700 tons of maximum force, a stroke of 250 mm and are equipped with a safety ring nut to guarantee a mechanical block of the load for periods of prolonged time. They also have a Nitox anti-corrosion and anti-wear treatment and an offshore coating to give to the hydraulic cylinders high resistance to corrosion when operating in an Offshore environment. To ensure better absorption of any lateral loads they are also equipped with an integrated tilting head.
